Default Guide: Blocking websites without programs.

Guide: Blocking websites without programs.

Do you want to block unwanted sites from your family?

Well, then if you answered yes, then this guide will prove VERY USEFUL to you! This method will not require downloading ANY programs, and you can always temporarily or permanently allow access to your certain website very quickly.

Process to blocking websites:

Open <My Computer>
Open Local Disk <C:\>
Open Folder <C:\WINDOWS>
Open Folder <C:\WINDOWS\system32>
Open Folder <C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers>
Open Folder <C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>
Open file <hosts>:

Then click open with Notepad:

Your hosts file should look like this:

To add sites to block, add everything in url after <http://>. Here's an example of blocking access to Google and Facebook:

If you want to stop blocking the site, simply delete the line with the site on it. When you block the site and try to enter it, it will simply go to the "Page cannot be displayed" page. So that's the guide I hope it helps.

Oh...and if this doesn't work for you, then you'll have to download another hosts file from internet and replace the existing one in <C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>.

Download link: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip

When you go edit it, you can delete all the websites currently there, or you can leave them if you want little to no more ads (warning...leaving that many websites will slow your internet very much since your computer will check to see that every website you visit doesn't include those sites). Just make sure you don't delete anything on or above the "localhost" line. Then you just follow the instructions above.

Thanks +rep really appreciated. More guides coming out, please check this forum regularly :p Thanks again.

Edit: What is this +rep thing? It's not feedback is it, because I think feedback is only for trades. And how do I give people +rep? Is there a thread discussing this? If not, someone please explain Thank you.

Lmfao! I've been tempted to use it many times to block facebook, myspace, and disable use of MSN when my sister wouldn't get off the computer. Though...I've never done it...I'm too nice >.< Oh well.
