Default [Tut] Speed up your computer without programs!

Speed up your computer without programs (windows XP)!

by Gully

Hey everyone, one of the main problems with peoples computers are that they are full of viruses, and often are very slow. Im going write a guide with perfect step by steps to get your computer into a much better state! Faster and cleaner!

-> The First Steps
  • The first thing you should do, is go through your list of installed programs. Click on the Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Now, look through the list and get rid of everything that you don't want anymore. Do NOT remove programs you know absolutely nothing about, because they could be Microsoft Updates or something just as critical.
  • The next thing you should do is delete stuff related to the programs you have just removed - sometimes there are extra's left over. Go to My Computer > Local Disk (C: ) > Program Files. Now look through the folders names and see if any of those names were the same names you removed from the Add or Remove Programs and if nothing but that particular program you uninstalled was in it > then delete it

-> Disk Cleanup
You should do a disk cleanup, it gets rid of unwanted files witch cause your computer to slow down.
  • Start menu > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup - It will take a while don't run anything else on your computer just leave the disk cleanup to run

-> Startup programs
your computer takes quite along time to reboot because of programs on startup, disable the ones you don't want to load upon start up
  • Go to Run > Type msconfig > startup tab > uncheck programs you don't want upon startup

-> Disable system restore

System restore holds alot of space on your computer, for some people who don't use it should disable it

Go to my computer > Right click > Properties > system restore tab > check turn off system restore

*If you use system restore do NOT do this step as it will put your computer in risk*

-> Disable indexing services
Go to my computer > right click Local Disk (C: ) > properties > uncheck allow indexing services > select to Local Disk (C: ) and subfolders

Thats the main ones i've done to my computer and its gone pretty fast now. I hope this guide helped

...Gully

Disabling system store would be a bad idea because if you download something and it infects you you can't get rid of it...

Why does have to MSN? Too secreto for the forums? If you don't want people to find out about something, post it at RSF.

I have never once used system restore. If I am stupid enough to download something with a virus, I just reformat. Of course, I'm never that stupid, so it's not been an issue.

If you re-format you lose all your stored files... >.>

Don't remove it just say that it's a very useful tool and it is not recommended disabling it.
