Default How To Make A Simple Film Canister Rocket

Canister Rocket
This is just a fun experiment to try out. The film canister flies around 50 feet in the air. I decided to post it here cause we tried it out in class, and it's actually pretty fun.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MATERIALS:
*Film Canister
*Construction paper (this is optional)
*Baking soda
*Vinegar

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROCEDURE:

1. When you are making this rocket, make sure you build it outside (it can get a bit messy, as well the rocket does go far)

2. Roll a piece of construction paper around the film canister so that you have a long tube (you don't need this but it does make it look more attractive)

3. Make sure that the cover of the film canister is the bottom end of the tube (so that you can fill it up with the acid and base). Tape the construction paper in place.

4. Make a nose cone by cutting a circle out of construction paper (This is for decoration purposes as well, it doesn't really help the flight).

5. Cut a line to the middle of the circle - the radius - and twist the paper into a cone shape.

6. Tape the ends together and tape it on top of the construction paper tube.

7. You may want to put some fins on the end opposite the nose cone. These can stabilize the rocket. These stabilizers can make sure the rocket flys in a straight line rather than flying all over the place.

8. Take off the cover of the film canister. Put a small amount of baking soda in the film canister and some vinegar and cover quickly. Make sure it doesn't explode as you are filling it up.

9. Set the rocket down so that the nose cone points up and the lid faces down

10. Stand back and wait for the reaction to trigger the take off of the rocket
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you enjoyed this guide, try it out sometime as well I might add pics of the experiment later :P

+rep if you would like
