How to make smoking devices out of household materials

In case you were wondering how to make some of these, or just don't have the money or legal age to buy one, here's how to make some homemade smoking devices.

1. Pipes




Making a pipe yourself is simple. There are different ways to make them, but the concept itself if simple. Something hollow for the body with a hole in it for a bowl to sit on. It can have another hole for a carb if you wish.

I built two pipes (one for salvia and one for weed) myself. For the weed pipe, I used a 4 inch long piece of 2 by 2 and drilled a small hole through it. I then drilled a hole on top that was slightly smaller than the socket I was using as a bowl and fitted the socket in tightly. I then secured the socket on with some electrical tape. You can use something else if you want, but electrical tape was what I had on hand and worked nicely. It shouldn't burn since you shouldn't keep fire on the weed that long, but if you're using it for Salvia, it might get a bit hotter on the bowl. Burnt tape is not very good tasting... I then whittled and sanded the end of the pipe to make it round. Whittling gave me serious blisters though...

The second pipe I made was a monster. Used a 4 inch piece of some random pipe thing that came out of a electric scooter axle. It's about a centimeter in diameter. It is taped onto a metal T connector for pipe that's the same diameter. I used the mesh grill from the old, cheap logitec speakers I had as a screen. I made sure to heat it up first to burn away all the paint because that's not very fun to smoke, especially if it's lead paint. I cut out a small square of it and bent it over the top part of the T and secured it by bending the 4 corners over the lip on the T. Then I got a nice, deep-well socket and used that as the bowl.

Alphafish's suggestion-
1. Get carrot, screwdriver and knife.
2. Bore a hole down the core of the carrot with a screwdriver.
3. With a knife create a bowl at the point in the carrot where the bore hole ends.
4. Put Herbs in bowl.
5. Light Herbs.
6. There is NO 6!

2. Bubblers



These are rather difficult to make since if it's too large, it's basically a bong.
The concept of a bubbler is a pipe that uses a water filter.

I made mine out of clay. Just went into the yard and dug until I hit clay, then I formed a bowl shaped thing with a divider inside of it. I put a covering on that and made a bowl to load out of clay and attached that to one end. Then I fitted a pen tube in the other end and added some water. It seemed to work good.



3. Bong




A bong is simple to make. You need something to hold the water that you can also cut a small hole into. I use a plastic bottle/jug for mine.

Take the bottle and peal off the labels. Then cut a small hole about 2 1/2 inches from the bottom. Insert a pen tube into that and tape it so that it is secure. Find something to use as a bowl (a socket works nicely) and secure that to the pen tube somehow, but make sure you can remove the bowl to reload it and stuff. You also might want to cut a small hole in the part where your thumb feels most comfortable while holding the bong. This will be your carb, which is a nice thing to have on a bong. The carb's function is to clear the chamber of the smoke in it and also allows you to get some fresh air in your hit. Add some water to it, but not too much or someone will wet the bowl when passing. Just enough to cover a centimeter or so of the downstem (pen tube).

a. Gravity Bong

A gravity bong uses ... I'm not quite sure. Either pressure or gravity to suck smoke from the bowl for you.

What you need is a large thing of water and a bottle that is small enough to into the large thing of water. A bucket and a 2 liter bottle or a 2 liter bottle and a water bottle would work nicely.

Cut the bottom off the smaller bottle. Find something to work as a nice bowl. It will go where the cap goes on the smaller bottle. You could probably use a socket wedged into the cap and place that on top.

The making of it is done. To use it, just push the bottle into the water until it reaches the neck of the bottle. Light the bowl and pull up slowly! Don't pull it all of the way out, but once it's up, remove the bowl and put your mouth over the top of the small bottle. Now slowly push it back down.
NOTE: for a fun hit, blow back into the bottle and hit it again.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!

a. Waterfall bong


Uses the same concept as a gravity bong, but in a different form.

Get a bottle and take the cap off. Mount your bowl onto the cap. Poke a small hole towards the bottom of the bottle itself. Add water and cover the hole. Replace the cap and load the bowl. Light the bowl and take your finger off the hole. As it drains, it will suck in the smoke. Unscrew the cap and hit that shit.


4. Hookah




Hookah's are loads of fun. Easy to build too.

I find that a 1 gallon jug works great for these.

I fitted a piece of pvc pipe through the top until it was about 1-2 inches from the bottom and taped it secure. I found something to use as a bowl on top of the pvc pipe. I made sure to secure it while it still being removable. The next step was to cut a small hole in the handle and insert a moderate length of flexible tubing. You can add more of them if you want to have more people smoking at once. I taped the tubing to seal it on. I removed the bowl and added some orange juice to act as the water filter and fired it up.

If you've never used a hookah before, it is a bit different. It feels like you're not getting any smoke at all, but you will see that you're getting plenty.

5. Vaporizer





A vaporizer is a device that is made to just heat the herb to just release the active compounds inside of it rather than burning the herb. It is much more efficient than smoking if it is done right.

There are different types of vaporizers. I'll explain how to make the light bulb and soldering iron types.


Light bulb Vaporizer

For this type you will need a clear light bulb, 2 straws, tape, and a plastic water bottle.

Take the light bulb and remove the golden metal circle thing from the bulb and remove the rest of the innards of the bulb. Wash it out with some water and let it dry while we work on the rest of it.
Take the plastic water bottle and cut off 2-3 centimeters from the top to just have the part that the cap screws into and a bit of the body. take that part and tape it securely to what's left of the metal part of the bulb. Then screw the cap off and put 2 holes into it. Put a full straw in one of the holes. Put a smaller section of a straw in the second hole. I suggest securing the straws on with something other than tape because tape can be quite tedious to use in this area. Hot glue or even chewed bubble gum would work nicely. Once you have this, you can add whatever you wish to smoke into the light bulb and replace the cap.

To use this, just light a lighter about 2-3 centimeters from the bulb and take a hit from the larger straw.


Soldering iron Vaporizer

To make this, you'll need a cheap soldering iron, jam jar, something to work as a nice bowl (has to be metal), some tubing and tape.

Take the jam jar and cut a hole in it that's about the same diameter as the soldering iron. Cut 1 other hole and insert the tubing into it. Tape the tubing to secure it. Put the bowl on the end of the soldering iron. Place your herb onto that and replace the lid to the jar.

Plug the soldering iron in and let it heat up the herb until there is smoke. Unplug the soldering iron to make sure not to burn the herb and take your hit. Plug in and unplug as needed.



I'm currently working on a plan of my own to use a stainless steal mesh to heat up weed inside of a bowl. It will be powered by a wall socket and will have a thermometer on it so I know when to use it. There will also be a switch on it to make sure I don't burn the weed. I'll have to play around with this, but I will get back to you with the results.

6. Sploof

This is really simple to make and can be useful for smoking indoors when you don't want to get caught.

Take an empty roll of toilet paper and poke 4 small holes at one end. Run some string or wire through those to prevent anything from falling out of it. Then, jam as many dryer sheets as you can in it and poke 4 holes on the opposite end. Run string or wire through that also to keep the dryer sheets in it. Blow smoke through it and it will mask the scent.

I haven't had to use one of these as I rarely smoke at home, but it seems like it would work nicely inside of a steamy bathroom to further mask the smell.


7. Auto-shotgun

Simple to make. Take a small waterbottle. Take off the cap. Poke a hole in the cap. Jam a pen tube into that hole, but leave the hole tight so that air can't escape. Cut a hole into the bottle itself at the bottom. Put a lit joint into the pentube that goes into the bottle. Screw cap on. Blow into bottle. I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
