Default Runescape

Yeah yeah I know we aren't a runescape forum but I figured this was worthy of a thread here.

Jagex is releasing a new anti-hijack system, identical to the one Blizzard has been using for the past six months. This new system makes it virtually impossible for someone to hack your account, BUT this is also good news for us black marketers.

You see if the account doesn't have an authentication system on it, then you can put one on it at any time. This means if you buy a level 120 off of sythe, and you want to make sure you don't get scammed then you put an authenticator on it and viola you're guaranteed to keep it.

You can read more about this on their homepage.

Also good news for scammers who will get their accounts back once they sell them.

I've been thinking about this.

This is either going to be really really good for the black market or really bad.

Lets say a person is selling their level 125 main but it has the authenticator on it. Now if there was some way of telling whether an account has an authenticator on it or not publically this could be a good thing. The person could say they are selling the 125, and you go online and see it has an authenticator on it. The person would have to first mail the authenticator to the buyer along with the account information (or to a MM or whatever). Then when the person receives the authenticator and account info then they have the account 100% secured.

This is of course assuming Jagex wont have some kind of system like "I lost my authenticator can I get it removed from my account?".

Now it could be really bad if there is no way of verifying that an account has an authenticator on it publically so you'd have to trust the person that there is no authenticator already on it. Of course as long as you use a middle man this shouldn't be a problem at all.

Best possible situation though is that the person selling the 125 doesn't have an authenticator on it, and the person that is buying already has an (unused) authenticator. After buying the account and getting the info they could use the authenticator on the account and it would be 100% secure.

This brings up a problem though. What if some phisher person bought an unused authenticator and phished some accounts. Lets say one of those accounts is a level 105. Is the activation of an authenticator on an account instant? If so then all a phisher would have to do is keylog the username and password, put the authenticator on the account, and BAM they have the account permanently.

I don't think Jagex is doing this to make player's accounts more secure, they are only doing this for the money. These authenticators will MOST LIKELY cost 15, if not 20$. And I am sure anyone that owns an account above level 110 will buy one of these, which is going to make Jagex SPANKING rich.

Well maybe phishing isn't dead for now. You could phish someone then if they don't have a Authenticator you could place one, and own the account for life
