Default 10 Reasons to use Linux

1) Speed. With the right kernal for your hardware, Linux makes much better use of your system resources.

2) Windowing Systems. The best two are KDE and GNOME. Bpth have their high and low points, but, unlike Windows, you can have both installed at the same time. Both are a lot differant, so it's akin to having Windows and Mac OSX on the same PC.

3) Multiple Virtual Desktops. These are one of my primary reasons why I love Linux. Just download a Knoppix Live CD and try it out.

4) Open Source. Another one of the mian reasons for loving Linux, especially if you can harness the power. This only really applies if you can program, but if not, it's more of a morals thing. Why should M$ get to decide what you do with the software YOU paid for? With Open Source, if you don't like something about Linux, you can change it.

5) Free Software. My current PC runs on 100% free, open source software (except Windows apps I use in Linux, such as games). For Microsoft Office, I use OOo (OpenOffice), which can open and edit Word, Powerpoint, and Excel files. For Photoshop, I use the GIMP, with photoshopesque plugins. For Instant Messaging, I use either GAIM, or Miranda IM, which can both connect to the most common protocols (MSN, Yahoo, AIM, etc.). For movies, I use Democracy Player. I jsut can't say how much I love this software (There is a windows version too.) You can search YouTube, download movies from YouTube directly to your hard drive, and then watch them anytime. There are also channels that you can tune in to. Amazing. I don't use an iPod, but I hear there is many great tools for getting songs on your iPod. Any software you use on Winblows has a Linux alternative. And if not...

6) WINE. The perfect tool for those who can't quite let go of Windows. This app lets you run Windows Apps. Perfect.

7) In both KDE and GNOME, any aspect of the look and feel of your system is customizable, with no programing knoledge and no extra software.

8) Easy Installation of Software. Especially in GNOME, software is insanely easy to install. Open up the Add/Remove Programs window, and it lists thousands of peices of software you can download right in that window and isntall, without ever having to use your web browser.

9) Load-Up Times. Hate having to wait minutes for your Winblows XP system to boot up? I've tested Ubuntu Linux, and I have a fully working desktop in under 60 seconds, from the time I press the power button to the time I can open up programs.

10) Community. Having problems with any aspect of your OS? Just go to your distributions site. The Ubuntu forums often have 1000+ people viewing the Installation Help forum at one time.

There's really no reason not to... Why pay for WIndows (and be able to get updates) when you can not pay for Linux, while not breaking the law, and get updates for life?

Yeah, those are some pretty leet features, but I bet Microsoft, and Apple could put together a whole list too.:P Linux is very awsome though.

Well, you see, I disagree. Sure, Apple could do it, but Microsoft could only do it after Apple had done it for years, and then called it a revolution in computing.

i mostly use Ubuntu or Suse when i use linux. If you need windows applications badly, just use WINE or WMWare.
